Let’s be honest. It’s much easier and faster to reach for your debit or credit card when paying for something. However, saving a few minutes here and there could lead to big problems. Not only are you apt to spend more money, but you could have your identity stolen. Let’s take a closer look at why you should pay cash for everything.
Do you find yourself spending more than you meant to? One way to break that bad habit is to use the envelope system. The way it works is that you put a certain amount into an envelope each pay period for variable expenses. For example, you would have one for groceries, one for gas, one for eating out, etc. When it comes time to go shopping, you take the envelope with you and leave your debit and credit cards at home. This forces you to stick to your budget.
Protect Your Privacy
Did you know that when you use debit and credit cards, all your transactions can be tracked? This won’t matter to most people, but if you want to protect your privacy, you should pay with cash. You can always keep your receipts so that you can track your purchases, but no one else can.
People can steal your credit and debit card information without you ever having to swipe your card. RFID scanners allow thieves to get the data from your card. If you want to truly protect yourself from identity theft, leave your credit and debit cards at home. Even if you’re using a wallet that protects your cards from these scanners, you can still have your data stolen through card readers and ATMs.
Last, but not least, you may want to use your credit card for special promotions or to spread out the cost of a purchase, but in the long run, it could really cost you. When you pay with your credit card, you can end up paying double or triple for an item. Save up your money for a large purchase and you’ll never have to worry about paying for an item long after it’s gone.
Cash is Emotional
You’re also less likely to spend money when you have to hand over cash for an item. You’ll think hard about whether or not you need it before you buy it!
Credit cards are easier to use, but they can cost you money and much more. If you want to save money and feel more in control of your money, you should pay cash every chance you get.
