Christmas is coming! Christmas is coming! Christmas is coming!
Excuse my while I get all “Buddy the Elf” over my favorite holiday.
The kids love Christmas, too, and a few years ago, my mom introduced them to reindeer food. If you don’t know what reindeer food is, you’re in for a fun new Christmas tradition! I’m going to show you how to make reindeer food (it’s so easy, and perfect for kids of ALL ages). I’ve also got a free printable reindeer food poem to go along with your reindeer food – which is *perfect* for sharing with friends!
To make reindeer food, you’ll need the following:
- Dry oatmeal
- Sprinkles or sparkling sugar (or both!)
- Ziplock bags (I used these)
- Optional: printable reindeer food poem bag toppers (included in this post)
Let the kids pour some oatmeal into each bag (I used about a cup per bag, but this is definitely not rocket science). Then, let them sprinkle in a bunch of sprinkles (the more the better! CHRISTMAS!) and/or sugar.
Make sure the bags are closed, and let the kids shake them really well to mix it all up.
If you are making these for friends or classmates, attach a bag topper to each one (just fold over and staple to the bag).
On Christmas Eve, let the kids sprinkle the reindeer food all over your front yard (or wherever you can find a place to sprinkle!) to entice the reindeer to land.
The first time we did this was magical. It had snowed, and the sugar crystals sparkled in the snow. It was SUPER exciting for the kids, and fun for the grown-ups, too.
You can download your free printable reindeer food poem bag toppers here.
The sugar will be gone in the morning and the oatmeal was next to impossible to find the next day (it was possibly eaten by some rogue geese in the neighborhood).
If you make some reindeer food this year, I hope these come in handy! 🙂
