I remember my first Mother’s Day, which happened not-so-many years ago. Jack was five months old. He was nursing. He was often fussy. I was tired. We lived in the middle of nowhere and it was SO STRESSFUL to go anywhere with a fussy baby that didn’t like his car seat that we ended up at a fast food restaurant for a Mother’s Day dinner. We ate at tables in the parking lot because Jack was less fussy when he was outside, and this way we could gobble down our french fries together while he sat in the Bumbo seat on the table between us (Bumbos on the table were totally okay in 2009, you guys).
And of course, my husband and I both have our own mothers that we needed to spend time with. I remember feeling torn between the need to recognize and thank our own mothers in a special way (as I’m sure many new moms before me have felt) and the need to just crawl into bed and take a nap, already.
But the thing is, even though that first Mother’s Day was kind of stressful and I didn’t do nearly as much as I should have for my own mom (which is okay, because she’s my mom and she understands), I still felt such a special happiness all day long. Kind of like a birthday.
Mother’s Day was a celebration, and I was grateful for every second of that day.
I love Mother’s Day even more now. The kids are active participants, and I just love the sweet little gifts they make for me. And now that they’re older, it’s easier to balance my Mother’s Day with my mom and mother-in-law’s Mother’s Day.
I also love going to the movies, and this year, the movie Mother’s Day will be in theaters April 29th – just in time to plan a special Mother’s Day outing! To make it even more fun, I made fun printable Mother’s Day coupons, too. You can make a little book of them or just stick one in a card to let your mom know you’re treating her to a movie night!
{Side note: This movie has some of my VERY FAVORITE actresses in it: Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston – I love them ALL.}
If you haven’t already seen it, you can check out the movie trailer here. I’m super excited about this…and hoping to go with my mom, my mother-in-law, and my sister-in-law when it opens!
