It’s that time of year again…when viruses and allergies seem to multiply and attach themselves to every surface your kids touch.
Then one morning they wake up with the dreaded cough (you know the one that sounds like there’s some kind of rabid dog running through the house?) and you have no idea what to do because they are now recommending that children under 6 not use cough medicine. Side note: it’s crazy how much things have changed just since my son was born seven years ago.
Here are a few natural cough remedies for kids that we like to try before running to the doctor (of course if it really does sound bad…go to the doctor).
Use a Humidifier
Most of the time in our house a cough is related to allergies (dry, scratchy throat kind of cough). Make sure that you have a humidifier in their room at night to help keep the air moisturized. Don’t be tempted to put essential oils in the humidifier since the oils can break down the plastic. But do also use an essential oil diffuser and put lemon, lavender and peppermint in it to help with allergies (some diffusers even double as humidifiers!).
Elevate the Bed
Many times a cough is caused by drainage. Place a few pillows under their mattress to help elevate the bed (and therefore their head) to keep the drainage from clogging up their throat. Jack always likes to sleep with two pillows, and we really notice a difference when he doesn’t.
This is an oldie, but a goodie. Chicken soup has so many wonderful healing properties. It’s a good source of liquids to help rehydrate (in case there’s more than just a cough). It has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that make it the perfect food whether you are sick or trying not to get sick.
Vapor rubs, such as Maty’s All Natural Vapor Rub with NO chemicals or toxins, can be very soothing when rubbed on the chest. This also places them near the nose where the healing properties can be breathed in. Many people also place vapor rubs on the soles of their kids’ feet and put socks over them.
Check out how great the ingredients are!
