There is a little town in Texas called Glen Rose. Less than two hours outside of Dallas, it’s a quaint little town with a surprisingly large list of things to do (a river to float, real dinosaur footprints to stand in, a fun downtown area full of cute restaurants…the list goes on). Over the last six years, we’ve made the trek to Glen Rose several times, and always with one “MUST DO” activity in mind: visiting Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.
Our last visit was in November. With stunning weather drawing us outside and my brother and his family visiting from Southern California, we knew it would be the perfect time to visit Fossil Rim.
Fossil Rim is a drive-through wildlife center. It took us about three hours to drive through, and that includes a stop for lunch halfway through at the Overlook Cafe (which provides some of the prettiest views I’ve seen in Texas!). The drive takes you on dirt roads through the animals in their natural habitat. You can buy food for them at the start of your journey, and feed them throughout your drive. We’ve been super lucky and had lots of opportunities to feed all the critters…even the giraffes!
I don’t think words can do this experience justice, which is fine because I have lots of incredible photos to share!
Halfway through your drive, you can stop and stretch your legs, use the restroom, and eat lunch (bring your own or buy something from the Overlook Cafe). Here you’ll find some incredible views. Whenever we stop here, I think of how lucky these animals are to live in such a beautiful place.
You’ll also get the chance to drive by the cheetah sanctuary. Every time we’ve been, we’ve seen at least one of the cheetahs lounging outside.
We like visiting the zoo, but there’s something special about seeing the animals in their natural habitat, and something really special about being so close to them. I mean, we all know giraffes are big…but until you’re staring at a giraffe’s knees while it puts its head through your sunroof, it’s hard to really grasp their size.
You can find more info about ticket prices, hours, and planning your trip here. The town of Glen Rose is a fun place with lots to offer, and if you’re making the trek from Dallas you’ll probably want to see all that you can while you’re there. You can find out more about Glen Rose here.
If you want to see Fossil Rim in the rain, check out this post – we visited Fossil Rim once during a torrential downpour – it was amazing!
