A few months ago, I was trying to get some stuff done and instead of sitting Jack down in front of the TV, I found a video on my phone that he could watch. We were in the same room, and he was sitting on the floor, intently watching a video about Transformer toys. And then…I noticed it didn’t sound like a Transformer toy video anymore.
I grabbed the phone from him and saw that he had been playing around in the online platform we’d been using to stream videos, and had managed to find some video about war tactics (!!).
Now, I am diligent about what my kids watch, and this freaked me out (even after checking to make sure he hadn’t seen anything graphic). I was also a little bit surprised. Jack is old enough to work a smartphone, but he’s also old enough to sit and watch a show on my phone. I realized that it’s really not safe to leave the kids alone with the internet, even if I think they are occupied with their current game or show.
So. I was thrilled to learn about Kidoodle.TV – and I really think that you will love it, too.
Kidoodle.TV (which is FREE for the month of December!) is a child-friendly video streaming app that allows parents to control the shows their kids are watching (and they’re good shows, ones that your child will recognize and be excited to watch – My Little Pony, Inspector Gadget, Strawberry Shortcake, for example). Designed for kids up to age 12, the interface is easy for children to navigate (my five-year-old had no trouble figuring this out). Parents can create profiles for up to five kids, and can control the programming each child has access to.
It’s easy to sign up – create your profile at the website, and then download the app on your phone and sign in.
I love (LOVE!) the Parents Room. This is where you get to create your child’s profile (including picking a color scheme and avatar) and choose which content is available to them. You can filter by age (it’s grouped into four categories: 0-2, 2-4, 5-8 and 9-12) and then also chose which shows you’d like them to have access to – and which ones you don’t want them to have access to.
There are lots of entertaining and educational choices (everything from Transformers to National Geographic for Kids), and I found lots of things they could watch.
Once you’ve set up the profiles, you can just choose which profile you need and hand the device to your child – most children around three or older can probably navigate the kid-friendly interface without help (or with a quick tutorial), and even if the child is younger, it’s safe – you don’t need to worry that they’ll be watching war videos if you leave them unsupervised for five minutes!
So – if you have a screaming kid in the car, or need five minutes of peace to finish wrapping presents, or just want to eat a quiet lunch – you can hand them your phone or tablet and let them choose a show to watch while you get things done!
The site is also free of ads (that’s a huge bonus, too).
It’s free for December, and after that, the cost is $4.99 a month for unlimited streaming. In my experience, worth it – and something we’ll continue after my trial period has been exhausted.
I love Kidoodle.TV. I really do. And the kids love it, too – they think it’s super special that they have their own app on mom’s phone with their very own shows – and that I let them pick out the shows themselves!
No more unapproved visits to war videos – it’s content I know and can trust.
