A few months ago, I did a Birchbox vs. Ipsy comparison (you can see this post, and what I got that month, here). I talked about the general differences between the two, and shared my haul for the month. Honestly, I was *this* close to canceling Birchbox at the time. But I couldn’t make myself cancel, because what if I missed out on something awesome next month? So instead of canceling, I updated my Birchbox profile and VOILA…my boxes improved.
I thought I’d revisit the Birchbox vs. Ipsy post with this month’s box/bag. So let’s do this! Ipsy vs. Birchbox, Round 2. Ding ding ding!
In case you are new to subscription boxes, or unfamiliar with Birchbox and Ipsy, here’s a quick rundown.
Both Birchbox and Ipsy are subscription beauty boxes, meaning I play a flat fee – in this case, $10 apiece – and each month, I receive a fun bunch of beauty samples to try out. I’ll share the general similarities and differences between the two later in this post, but the cost and the amount of samples (usually, 4-5 per box) are consistent between both subscriptions. Also, both allow you to set up a profile that determines what you’ll receive each month (not everyone gets the same items each month). Also, generally speaking, Birchbox sends higher-end items in smaller sizes – and Ipsy sends less-expensive brands but often in larger sizes. So, keep that in mind as I share the contents of each subscription.
Birchbox always arrives in a sturdy little cardboard box (these are great to have around to store things in or use for crafts). Each month, you’ll receive 4-5 items. These are generally “fancy” brands, and come in small sample sizes. Every now and then, they’ll include a full-size product – a couple months ago I got a full-size Stila lip gloss. This month I received:
- Harvey Prince Hello perfume sample
- Cynthia Rowley Beauty Creamy lip stain
- Perlier body cream
- Davines OI All in One Milk
- Caudalie Polyphenol C-15 Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum
- Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo
- Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner
For the longest time, it seemed like I was getting perfume and shampoo samples every month, and I almost canceled. But then I updated my profile – I rarely get perfume anymore (this is the first one I’ve had in months). Overall, I feel like the last few months have been an improvement and I am excited about Birchbox again!
You can subscribe to Birchbox here (this is my link, which means I get points if you subscribe – and once you sign up, you can get points if your friends sign up through your link, too).
I also get an Ipsy bag each month.
Ipsy arrives in a shiny pink bubble mailer (love it). Every month, they send 5 makeup samples AND a makeup bag. The makeup samples are always a good size (big enough to sample several times), and often times they are full-size (like the lip gloss, mascara, and eyeliner I got this month!). The brands are generally not super expensive brands, but there are many that I recognize. Here’s what I got this month:
- Be a Bombshell Lash Out mascara
- Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray
- NYX Butter Gloss
- Jesse’s Girl Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
- olehenrikson Truth to Go Wipes
I think Ipsy might cater to a younger crowd – it’s not likely that their demographic is 35-year-old mothers, based on all the glittery things I’ve received. But I’m not ready to give up all the glitter and all the shimmer quite yet, so I have been enjoying these bags. A lot. Sometimes, I get things I’ll never ever in a million years use – like purple mineral makeup and black shimmer eyeshadow (I can’t get rid of it, though…what if I need it one day?).
At first, I thought I wouldn’t need all the makeup bags (since they send one each month). But now? I don’t know what I did without them – I use them to sort nailpolish, hair ties, and even the kids’ toys.
You can subscribe to Ipsy here (this is my link, which means I get points if you subscribe – and once you sign up, you can get points if your friends sign up through your link, too).
Anyway! I love getting both of these little packages of makeup-y goodness each month, and I wanted to share and show you the difference between the two in case you’ve been wondering or thinking about subscribing!
Do you get either of these?
