Happy holidays everyone! I’m hyped and I feel like a kid again (a kid with lots of stress and little sleep…and more responsibility haha!) This seems to be a year of DIY in my house, and I love the idea of vamping up my (I mean, a friend’s *wink wink*) closet with some cute and simple crafts.
I found a great way to do just that from Kacey over at The Drifter Collective, who has fun & easy ways to tie dye all kinds of things to give your favorite people this Christmas. Also check out her site for tips on how to decompress this holiday season and stay calm (or calm-ish) 🙂
Fun & Easy Ways to Tie Dye
Fun and Easy Ways to Tie Dye
Tie dying is a classic craft because it can be done at any time of the year and it’s universally loved. You get to express yourself by designing your own colors and prints, and it can even be used to make gifts for people of nearly any age. If you haven’t tried tie dying before, you should definitely put it on your bucket list. It’s something everyone should experience at some point in their life.
There’s a simple process to tie dying, so it’s easy to learn how to do if you’ve never done it on your own. Once you know how to do it, you can tie dye nearly anything so check out some ways that you can get creative with the things you already own. Do it by yourself to some fun music or get the family together and make it a family craft. You can’t go wrong when it comes to tie dying.
- Dye Your Shirt
Shirts are the first things that everyone thinks of tie dying because it’s such a classic piece of clothing to play around with. Shirts can be colorful and expressive, plus they’re pretty cheap to buy if you just want to try something out that you don’t have experience doing. Look around at your local stores and craft shops to see what’s on sale and try to find a white shirt that fits you but doesn’t break the budget.
Dying your shirt will be super easy with the right instructions. Just get the colors that you want (there’s really no limit to the colors you can use!), then fold up the shirt how you like it and tie it with string. The string is optional, since you can clip the shirt together with whatever you have around the house that you don’t mind being dyed. Dip it in your dye or squirt on the colors you’ve chosen and let it dry completely before wearing it.
- Make Your Own Tapestry
It’s recently become popular to have a patterned tapestry hanging above a couch or a bed, but they can get pricey, so why not make your own? With your favorite fabric and some cute colors, you can easily make your own and have all your friends ready to make theirs too. Bunch it up how you like to make different designs and then get creative with your colors.
- Change Up Your Shoes
Ever been in that situation where you don’t want to throw out your favorite pair of shoes, but you can’t seem to scrub the dirt out of them to make them look good? Tie dye them instead! The colors will give your shoes new life, especially since you can easily customize them. Make sure to wear gloves, since the dye can stain your hands.
- Sport A New Headband
If you have long hair, you’ve probably looked into getting a headband at some point. They’ll help keep your stray hairs away from your face while you’re working around the house or exercising. Skip the store and head straight for your dye, because it’s easy to tie dye a headband. Just cut up an old shirt, braid it and then splash some color where you like it.
- Upcycle A Tote Bag
Maybe you’ve tie dyed before and you’re looking for a project that takes things up a notch without getting too complicated. Think about making your own tote bag. You can easily sew up some thick white fabric so the bag is sturdy but good for dying, and then get busy with your colors! Since the chances are slim that you have a white tote bag hanging around the house, this might be the better option than going out and buying one.
- Make Old Shorts New Again
When it comes to clothing, t-shirts aren’t the only thing you can throw in a tie dye bucket. You can also dye things like shorts, since they’re super easy and don’t require you to buy any fabric. Try to stick with white denim, or you can bleach regular denim until it’s white. Then just follow your usual tie dying routine until you’ve got your shorts looking exactly how you want them.
If you’re bored over the weekend or have to entertain a group of kids, tie dying is definitely a good way to spend your time. It’s easy for anyone to do and can be done to almost any piece of clothing or accessory. Spend some time looking around your living space for things you can dye, then crack out those dye bottles and get going.
