DIY Power Rangers Costume

If I can make this no-sew DIY Power Ranger costume, anyone can. Seriously. It’s made with tape.

I am mostly not the kind of person who makes her kids’ Halloween costumes. In theory, I’d love to. Homemade costumes are cute, they fit better, they’re unique…homemade Halloween costumes are awesome! But you know those costumes you can find at Walmart and Target? Those are also awesome. Mostly becaue, you don’t have to make them. And my plan this year was to get both of my kids ready-made costumes.

Until Claire decided that she wanted to be the Pink Power Ranger for Halloween. Apparently, not a Pink Power Costume in the world exists in a size small enough for my toddler.

As I was scrolling through Google looking for “Power Ranger costumes for toddlers” one evening, I came across the Samurai Power Rangers (did you know that there are 19 seasons of Power Rangers, and most of them had different costumes??). I realized that I could easily make a similar costume myself using Duck Tape (that’s the brand name). Even though I’ve never made a costume before in my life. And so? I did.

DIY Power Rangers Costumes

I bought them inexpensive masks to wear with these costumes (because I ain’t THAT crafty).

These were SO easy to make, and inexpensive, too. I figure the total cost was around $30 (minus the masks) for both costumes, and that included their shirts and pants…so at about $15 per costume, we saved a few bucks AND they can wear the shirts and pants again (well…Jack might not want to wear the pants again, as they’re girls’ leggings).

DIY Power Rangers Costume Tutorial

Here’s what you’ll need:

DIY Power Rangers Costume supplies

I chose the Samurai rangers because their costumes were the easiest…mostly solid shirts with solid black pants and boots. I took some creative liberties (forgive me if you’re a Power Rangers fan – I KNOW the boots should be blue and not silver, but I didn’t want to buy any more tape!).

I bought all of these supplies at Walmart (or had them around the house, but I’ve included some affiliate links so you can buy directly from Amazon if you’d like):

  • Black pants (I used leggings for both kids)
  • Solid long-sleeve shirt in a Power Ranger color
  • Wide silver roll of Duck Tape (Duck Tape brand is available at Walmart but I’m sure you could use any colored duct tape, or find Duck Tape at other locations)
  • Wide gold roll of Duck Tape
  • Skinny black roll of Duck Tape (found this in the craft section)
  • Skinny white roll of Duck Tape (also in the craft section…I actually used glow-in-the-dark, but it took two rolls because the roll was smaller)
  • Ruler (if straight lines are important, but I mostly eyeballed it)
  • Pencil (again, only if you need a ruler)
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie

Power Rangers Costume Sleeve

Roll the silver tape around the sleeves. I actually laid the tape down and kind of pressed the sleeve into the tape (these sleeves are rolled because they were too long…you won’t need to do that if your shirt fits!). Be sure to cut the tape after the first round and start fresh on the second (you can see here that I overlapped about half of the first roll). You don’t want to just wind the tape around and around becuase it will get all bunched up and creased.

Power Rangers Costume Sleeve 2

As you roll the tape around the sleeves, you want there to be some open space between the fabric and the tape (just don’t let the tape touch itself and get stuck!). Once the tape is on, the sleeves aren’t going to stretch, so we want to make sure there’s plenty of room to squeeze little hands through!

Power Ranger Sleeve

Stick your fingers in the sleeve and press the fabric to the tape so it no longer gaps.

Power Rangers Samurai Stripes

This is where you might use the ruler and pencil to sketch out your lines. I just guessed and it came out fine. I used two strips (overlapping) of the white (glow-in-the-dark, actually) skinny tape to make the stripes. I did the one on the left first so the one on the right would cover its end. I had the long stripe end roughly where I planned on putting the belt (which I marked with a safety pin when I had the shirt on Jack to see where I wanted it).

Power Rangers Samurai Stripes

Next, I added black skinny tape to the stripes, and also wrapped one stripe around each silver sleeve. I used the gold for the belt – be sure to avoid pulling the waist tight with the tape. Remember this will have to go over your child’s head and shoulders, and the tape has no stretch to it!

Power Rangers Samurai Belt and Symbol

The finishing touches were the belt “buckle” and the symbol on the chest. For the belt, I simply cut out a circle on a piece of paper (I just traced the roll of tape!). I used three pieces of gold tape to cover one side of the circle, flipped it over, and covered the other side. The outline of the paper circle was visible and I cut it out and used a folded-over piece of tape to attach it to the belt.

I googled “Power Rangers Samurai symbol”, found what I was looking for, and then drew it onto the tape (while still on the roll) with a Sharpie, and then cut it out.

Power Rangers Pants

The pants are a teeny bit different than the sleeves. You’ll start the same…lay the tape down and press the pant legs into the tape. But trust me on this…you want to have enough room in the opening to easily get feet in and out! If you have wide-legged pants this shouldn’t be a problem, but I was using leggings (Power Rangers have tight pants, right?). So, leave a little section untaped.

Power Rangers Pants2

Use your hand to really stretch out the leg opening, and press it into the tape while it’s stretched out. This will give you a wider opening and make the pants much easier to put on! I used two rounds of silver tape on each leg, but I think it would be cute to go up higher to make them more “boot-like”.

Add a black stripe around the silver and you are done!

I bought masks online at Amazon, but I have seem them before at Party City…and I bet they cost less than the ones I bought!

The end result? Two cute Power Rangers who are (in Jack’s words) READY FOR ACTION!

oh my goodness, that is awesome!!!

This is awesome! So creative! I know many parents that will love this idea! What a great money saver! Duct tape…great job!

These are awesome! You did a fantastic job! I haven’t even thought about what we’re going to do!

Very cute! My son was a power ranger a few years ago, but I got one of those cheap costumes. These look way nicer!

Very cute idea! My son was a green power ranger for years!! The costume kept getting shorter and shorter!

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit
crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

How creative, they are great. Thanks for linking up to Sweet and Savoury Sunday, stop by and link up again. Have a great day!!

Hi! Love these! We are looking for Power Ranger costumes for our boys. They cost $40 each at the Halloween store! They are $20 at Target, but not in the sizes or colors we need. Boo! 🙁

SO… I came across your page and I am inspired to create our own PR costumes! Question though… when you say you can reuse the shirts and pants… did you take the Duck Tape off? Does it leave sticky residue? My boys will probably want to keep the costumes just the way they are, but I’m still curious. I imagine washing and drying with Duck Tape is a no-no. But I don’t know?! I’m wondering if the leggings will be in good enough condition that I can pass them on to my daughter when she gets bigger. 🙂

How cute Carrie! The costumes turned out great!

found this on pinterest! Thank you so much! I will have four little power rangers this year and I am using shirts/pants I already had or found very cheap or free! Also a tip….My walmart did not have the skinny black or white tape so I bought the regular kind and used my husbands exacto knife to cut it in half a few layers at a time! It worked well!

Yes I checked both sections and no luck :/. But I worked out really well. I will post a picture of them all dressed up for Halloween! We will have pink, red, blue and green! I actually figured out a way to make the mask for only a few dollars! And boots for no cost :). My sister and I have a small blog so I might post the how to on the mask/boots on there. Thanks again!

My son has two power ranger costumes already and buying them all is getting expensive. I like this idea for a stocking filler how much did it cost total?

I was actually able to make four power ranger costumes for around 15 dollars because I luckily had almost all the shirts and pants I needed to do it :).
