I’m kind of a subscription box addict. I only get two, but I would buy ALL THE SUBSCRIPTION BOXES if I could. The two I get are Birchbox and Ipsy (both beauty boxes), and I’ve had some people ask me about the difference between the two – so I thought I’d share my thoughts on the two and give you a comparison.
I bring you: Birchbox vs. Ipsy!
But first, a quick ruindown of what Birchbox and Ipsy are (for the uninitiated). Both Birchbox and Ipsy are subscription beauty boxes, meaning I play a flat fee – in this case, $10 apiece – and each month, I receive a fun bunch of beauty samples to try out. I’ll share the general similarities and differences between the two later in this post, but the cost and the amount of samples (usually, 4-5 per box, although I did get SIX items in my November Ipsy…) are consistent between both subscriptions. Also, both allow you to set up a profile that determines what you’ll receive each month (not everyone gets the same items each month). Also, generally speaking, Birchbox sends higher-end items in smaller sizes – and Ipsy sends less-expensive brands but often in larger sizes. So, keep that in mind as I share the contents of each subscription.
Birchbox always arrives in a sturdy little cardboard box (these are great to have around to store things in or use for crafts). Each month, you’ll receive 4-5 items. These are generally “fancy” brands, and come in small sample sizes. Every now and then, they’ll include a full-size product – and the hope of these is what keeps me coming back for more! This month I received:
- DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer Moisturizing Serum
- Perfume sample of Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Cologne Absolue
- Allison Raffaele Reality Base Foundation
- POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer (full-size)
- ChapStick Hydration Lock (full-size)
Sometimes I think I set myself up wtih the old lady profile when I signed up for this subscription – I tend to get lots of serums and perfume and shampoo samples, and to be honest, I don’t love getting those things. They once sent me tooth wipes (to wipe wine off your teeth), and I nearly canceled because…well…I can never imagine a time when I would use tooth wipes (but that’s not to say someone else wouldn’t love them, I suppose?). I keep this subscription, though, because I have found a few really great makeup items I now use daily, and also because every now and then they send a full-size lipgloss or nailpolish that I love. And, of course, I love opening it each month and digging through everything – it’s like a present, just for me, that I didn’t have to pick out myself.
You can subscribe to Birchbox here (this is my link, which means I get points if you subscribe – and once you sign up, you can get points if your friends sign up through your link, too).
Which brings me to Ipsy. I heard about it when I was thinking about canceling Birchbox, so I signed up to see if it might fill the big gaping hole I knew I’d have in my life without Birchbox.
October Ipsy Glam Bag
Ipsy arrives in a shiny pink bubble mailer (love it). Every month, they send 5 makeup samples AND a makeup bag. The makeup samples are always a good size (big enough to sample several times), and often times they are full-size (look at fun stuff above – all of it’s big enough to last me a long time, and the nail polish is full-size). The brands are generally not super expensive brands, but there are many that I recognize – and I think I’ve received at least one organic product every month, too. This month I received:
- Bella Terra Mineral Cosmetics Eye Shadow
- Zoya Nail Polish
- Coastal Scents Medium Shadow Brush
- Sexy Hair Texturizing Spray Clay
- Nourish Organic Deeply Nourishing Coconut and Argan Body Lotion
- Makeup “Glam” Bag
I think Ipsy might cater to a younger crowd – it’s not likely that their demographic is 35-year-old mothers, based on all the glittery things I’ve received. But I’m not ready to give up all the glitter and all the shimmer quite yet, so I have been enjoying these bags. A lot. Sometimes, I get things I’ll never ever in a million years use – like purple mineral makeup and black shimmer eyeshadow (I can’t get rid of it, though…what if I need it one day?).
At first, I thought I wouldn’t need all the makeup bags (since they send one each month). But now? I don’t know what I did without them – I use them to sort nailpolish, hair ties, and even the kids’ toys.
You can subscribe to Ipsy here (this is my link, which means I get points if you subscribe – and once you sign up, you can get points if your friends sign up through your link, too).
Between the two, I’ve had some really great finds, and they’re mostly products I would have never bought on my own. Here are some of my favorite Birchbox/Ipsy items:
In the past, I’ve given Birchbox subscriptions to friends as gifts for birthdays and Christmas (you can give a three-month subscription for $30, and they even have boxes for men!). This year, I will likely do the same (I did check to see if Ipsy does gift subscriptions, and it appears they do not…so it will be Birchbox again this year).
And as for me? I’m keeping both subscriptions. I’m also hoping that subscription boxes are here to stay!
Do you get either of these? Or is there another subscription box I need to know about?
