I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Zarbee’s Naturals. I received product samples and a promotional item as a thank you for participating. Be sure to take advantage of the Zarbee’s coupon at the bottom of this post!

I swear, we have had at least one person in this household sick since before Thanksgiving. Luckily (I guess??), it’s mostly been me. But the kids have had their fair share of illness, too, and it hasn’t been easy.

It’s always hard when the kids are sick. You never want to see them suffer, but really, there is very little you can do to ease their discomfort. Especially if they’ve got a cough.

Did you know that children’s cough syrup is unsafe for kids under the age of four?

Dr. Zak Zarbok, pediatrician and father to four boys, wanted to find something to ease his kids’ coughs when they were young. Unable to find anything suitable on the market, he set about creating his own cough medicine for little ones. After discovering a study showing that dark honey was effective in calming coughs in children, he created an all-natural, great-tasting, and safe cough medicine for kids – Zarbee’s All Natural Cough Syrup.

Zarbee's All Natural Cough Syrup

Dye-free, gluten-free, and drug-free, Zarbee’s are made from natural ingredients (you can find out more about the ingredients here). This is important to me – with a kid who is already getting a daily dose of allergy medicine and pain-killers more frequently than I would like due to severe growing pains, I don’t want to add any new drugs to his system if I can avoid it. Zarbee’s gives me a way to treat my kids’ coughs without putting a bunch of junk into their systems.

Jack has been extra congested lately (always, eternally congested…thanks, allergies!), and the first thing I opened up was the cough syrup and mucus relief. Not only did he love it (the main ingredient is honey, and who doesn’t love honey?), but I also noticed he cleared up, too.

Zarbee’s All Natural Cough Syrup comes in four versions: a baby cough syrup (honey-free, for infants two months and older), children’s cough syrup, children’s nighttime cough syrup (with melatonin), and children’s cough syrup and mucus relief.

My favorite product (and the one I have been using every night before bed for the last several days) is the Cough & Throat Relief Nighttime Drink. I love this because it’s made for kids and adults. I made myself a hot mug of this and my cough was immediately soothed. It tastes like honey with a touch of lemon.

This is the perfect thing to drink as I’m winding down and trying to settle my cough before bed.

With both kids in pre-school, we do everything we can to avoid getting sick, but it seems like it’s never enough. Here are a few helpful hints from Dr. Zak to help you through cold and flu season (it seems so obvious, but I’ve never thought to label the kids cups that they leave all over the house – totally going to do this!):

Cough and Cold Tips

No matter how hard we try, though, we can’t always avoid getting sick. I’m learning that sick and germs are the nature of small children. If you’re around other kids, or ever step out your front door, for that matter, there is probably going to be a time when your kiddos get sick. When that happens, you can use this Zarbee’s coupon to get $1.50 off your purchase AND free shipping, too:

Unfortunately, I can’t keep all the sick away, all the time (I’m coughing as I write this). But I do feel better knowing that I can make my kids more comfortable when they are sick with all-natural products like Zarbee’s cough syrup.

Have you tried Zarbee’s?

I have never heard of or seen this brand before. My family lives a natural lifestyle, and I think Zarbee’s sounds like a great product! I’m lucky, because my son has only had one cold and it was over a year ago. I will be looking to acquire these, so I have them on hand for when he does catch something again. Thanks for sharing!

We use honey for sore throats, too – this tastes just like honey (that’s the main ingredient) but it has a few other added ingredients to help with coughs and sore throats, too.

Good thing my daughter didn’t get sick much when she was little, I had no idea kids under 4 shouldn’t have cough medicine! I’m pretty sure I must have given her some that contained some not so great ingredients when she was younger :( 18 years ago there wasn’t as much information out there as there is now.

I think it was 2007 or 2008 when they changed the cough syrup rule, so you were doing the right thing for the time! This actually reminded me of my husband’s baby book…he was a colicky baby and the doctor had my MIL give him some craaaaazy drug when he was seven months old to sleep better at night. She wrote a comment in his book like, “it was magical!” or something along those lines…we laugh now because it’s some horrible drug we’d never give a baby today!

This is great! I have never tried this product, I’ve used Hyland’s, but I will get some tomorrow. We are battling pretty bad colds. Shoo flu! I’m so grateful for your site…I’ve been lost in the sea of bloggers…but feel like I have a direction now because of you. So thank you!
