Disclosure: I received a complimentary massage to facilitate this Massage Envy Spa review. But there’s something in it for you, too – one lucky local DFW resident is going to win a 60-minute massage from Massage Envy!
I’ve had plenty of massages – some have been amazing, and others mediocre (but who am I kidding…a mediocre massage is still better than no massage). But until recently, I had never had a massage at a Massage Envy Spa. And I will be honest – I didn’t know what to think of Massage Envy Spas – I kind of assumed they were discount spa locations, kind of like the discount hair salons I mostly avoid (even though I love a cheap haircut, you know what I mean?). Still – I was *super* excited to be going, because this mom could always use a massage.
It turned out that I was way off base. You guys – this place was awesome. I went to the Massage Envy Spa in Murphy, TX.
First of all, when I walked in to the spa (and it is, indeed, a spa – no “discount haircut place” vibe to be had), I was immediately transported from my day of OMG-CLEANING-THE-HOUSE-CRAZY-KIDS-WANT-TO-LEAVE-AAAGGHHH to ahhhhhhhhh. Lights were dimmed, soft music was playing, and I was greeted by two friendly receptionists who provided me with a couple of forms to fill out.
I filled out the forms in the very relaxing waiting area (which included big comfy chairs, water, magazines, and the same peaceful music and dim lighting). If you’ve never had a massage before and are a little nervous about the prospect (I was totally nervous the first time I got a professional massage), the paperwork would reassure you – it asks if you’ve ever had a massage before, what places you’d like avoided, what level of pressure you’d prefer. The receptionist and the massage therapist both look it all over to make sure you will have the kind of experience you’re expecting.
As soon as I was done with my paperwork, I met my massage therapist – Christina – and she took me back to my room. Massage newbies, here’s the drill: you get undressed and climb under the covers. I normally do this as quickly as possible, and this was no exception, but Christina gave me plenty of time to relax before she came back in for the massage – and this brings me to Reason #176 I loved this massage – the massage table was heated. It. Was. Heavenly.
After a few minutes of relaxing on the heated table (divine, I tell you), Christina came back in and asked me a couple of questions (like what I spend my time doing, what kind of pressure I wanted, etc.) and then got to work.
I was there for a Swedish massage – I’ve never had a deep tissue massage before. But I asked her to really get after it and use all the pressure she needed on my extra tight areas (back, shoulders, neck – the usual). There were times when it was intense…like, painfully intense…but I wanted her to work the ever-loving snot out of the knots and tight muscles in my back and you know how sometimes things hurt, but they hurt so good?? Yeah…that was this (a side note – I asked for lots of pressure – you can ask for light or medium pressure if that’s what you prefer!).
Christina was very intuitive and did a great job of knowing where to apply the pressure and where to back off…when she finished, I stayed on that heated table for a couple of minutes feeling like a melted pile of goo (in the best way possible!) before getting up and getting dressed and returning to the “real world” (boo).
Once the massage was over I went up front to check out. For every massage Massage Envy Spas in the DFW area give on September 18th, they’ll donate $10 to the Arthritis Foundation. You can find more information here (book a massage and help a good cause!). This particular day, they were having a baked goods sale with all proceeds benefiting Healing Hands for Arthritis – and what better way to end a massage than with a chocolate chip cookie?
So, now that you’ve heard about ALL THE AWESOME I experienced at my Massage Envy Spa experience, are you ready for your own? One lucky winner will get an hour massage from a Massage Envy Spa near you – be sure to check out the locations to make sure there’s one near you!
