On Cavities, Writing, and Kids

This morning, I had a bunch of cavities filled.  The worst part not being that I had cavities filled, but that I have to go back in a couple weeks for more.

To be honest, it wasn’t that bad.  It was an hour of slight discomfort, made curious by my first-ever experience with laughing gas.

There was one point, as I peered over the gas mask resting on my nose, that I noticed the muscles in the dentist’s forearms were bulging as he was drilling on one tooth for a particularly long time, and I thought, “Hmmm…this is probably going to hurt later on!” It turns out I was right.  It has been a little sore.

In fact, the numbness was starting to wear off and the ache already starting to set in when I returned home.

As Charles was telling me about how great the kids were while I was gone, and how Jack had entertained Claire with rides around the house on his new favorite toy (the battery-charged four-wheeler Memaw had brought with her when she last visited), I opened my email on my phone.

And then, quickly interrupted Charles with an exclamation of delight as I realized one of the emails was from an editor at BlogHer – and that they were going to feature one of my posts on BlogHer Moms!

Dental work is a lot easier to swallow when it’s followed with good news, and I’ll remember yesterday as the first time I had a post published on BlogHer rather than the first time I had a bunch of cavities filled.

Slowly, but surely – things are starting to move on this blog.

The post that was featured was a post I wrote a few months back when I accidentally bought some mom jeans, and then wore them out in public (only kinda/sorta realizing they were “mom jeans” when I got dressed in the morning).  If you’d like to read it, you can find it here.

And one little piece of advice: when it comes to fillings, don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today (cavities can spread, guys…and it’s not pretty).

  2. As a frunchy momma I would have to tell you that you can try using fermented cod liver oil and butter oil (they come in one pill) to help keep your teeth cavity free from now on. And I pray he used the white fillings not the silver as those contain approximately 50% mercury.

    • Oooh, thanks for the tip…I’ll see if they have those at my local health food store. Is there a special name for it?

And yes, the fillings were white…I didn’t even think to ask beforehand but luckily he did, indeed, use the white (porcelain, I think?) fillings. Thanks goodness. Mercury = scary.

  3. I use green pasture and I think you have to order them. They are expensive but people have seen great results with them. Also using toothpaste that contains xylitol is supposed to help a ton. we use Spry

    • I have to special order some stuff for the kids to help with their immune systems – I’ll see if the site I order from carries it, that would be very convenient. They might have that toothpaste, too.

      Thanks!

  4. I HATE the dentist! I battle this by going to a very cute dentist!

    • That sounds like a good plan, actually! Did you just get lucky or did someone refer you (based on his excellent dentistry skills, of course).

  5. Congrats on the post publication! Shuddering at the dental work. I had a cavity filled about a month ago and it was awful. :(

    • Thank you!

Yeah, I can definitely see why the whole “sedation dentistry” thing exists. When it got a little tense, I just breathed in deeper and sucked down a little more gas.

  6. I know how you feel! I can’t wait until I get my dental insurance so I can start getting mine taken care of.
